The area of Vicchio is inhabitated since roman age. The town quickly grew in importance and economic power, during the Middle Ages. Vicchio is a delicious town, that offers many interesting places: Piazza Giotto, the main square of the city, on which there is the ancient Palazzo Pretorio, today Town Hall, and the Church of S.Giovanni Battista, dated to 1447. In the hamlet Vespignano there is the native House of Giotto, while near the hamlet of Barbiana there is the Church of S.Andrea: the current church, consecrated in 1568, replaced a previous building, documented already from the beginning of the 14th century. In Vicchio, moreover, we find the Museum of Beato Angelico, Dominican friar and famous painter of the Renaissance. The artistic patrimony of Vicchio is undoubtedly rich, but also the naturalistic aspects are very interesting: for example, the Lake of Montelleri deserves a visit. And then, it is beautiful to take a walk to the locality of Gattaia: the road is colorful, typical of the area, and it offers the panorama of the mountains that surround the Mugello valley.
