Scarperia was founded at the beginning of the 14th century, with the name of Castel san Barnaba. In the following century Scarperia grew from the economic point of view, thanks to its position: it is situated on the main road from Florence to Imola and Bologna. Scarperia is a graceful medieval village, that deserves a visit. We can start from the Palazzo dei Vicari, on the main square of the town, and in front of the Church of Santi Jacopo and Filippo. The current building became parish church only in 1808, when the convent of San Barnaba was eliminated as a result of the Napoleonic decrees. The building has been subjected to several restorations; inside, some remarkable works are conserved. Among the sacred buildings in Scarperia, we remember the wonderful Pieve di S.Agata, in the hamlet of Sant'Agata: it is very ancient, founded at least in the year 984. And then, the Pieve di S.Maria in Fagna and the Oratorio della Madonna del Vivaio, dated to 1724. Moreover, starting from Scarperia, there are many possibilities to walk, with paths that lead in the nature, to relax and enjoy the landscape.
