Rosignano

The name Rosignano probably derives from a roman name of person, Rusinius or Rasinius. In 1862 it was added the specification "marittimo", that is "della Maremma" (in Latin language 'Maritima'), in order to distinguish it from Rosignano Monferrato, in Piedmont. Rosignano Marittimis characterized from the wide beaches with modern bathing establishments. Particularly famous are the so-called "spiagge bianche" (white beaches), situated along the coast between Rosignano and the hamlet of Vada. The sand has this unusual colour because of the presence of factories where the bicarbonate is treated, approximately a kilometer away from the coast. But Rosignano is not only sea and beautiful beaches: in the town you can visit the archaeological civic Museum of Palazzo Bombardieri. Here there are reconstructions and findings, referable to Etruscan and Roman age; there are also material from the searches of underwater archaeology along the coast. In the ground floor, there is one of the most interesting room: the reconstruction of a roman villa of the first century A.D., with furnitures and and objects of the daily life.
