The town, whose origin is dated around the year 1000, conserves the structure of medieval castle with walls and access doors. Interesting the visit to the center of Pomarance with the parish Church of the 12th century, restored, embellished by paintings; then, the Piazza della Pretura and the beautiful palaces of Via Roncalli, dated to the 19th century, among which Casa Bicocchi, a bourgeois residence, perfectly conserved, complete of all the furnishings and open to public. Among the curiosities of the zone, we signal the hamlet of Larderello: a small village of 850 inhabitants, that is situated in the middle of the so-called "Valle of the diavolo" (Devil's Valley), because of its landscape characterized by the presence of boric acid fumaroles (a volcanic phenomenon, through which the gases of the subsoil come up in surface) with the characteristic white vapours. Larderello is the first experience in the world of exploitation of the geothermical energy for the electricity production. Thanks to the heat coming from the subsoil, here we produce approximately 25% of the required electric energy of all Tuscany. Larderello, moreover, accommodates an interesting Museum of the Geothermics.
