Pienza

Pienza is probably the most famous and important center of all the Val d'Orcia. The history of the town is closely linked to the one of Enea Silvio Piccolomini, born in Pienza in 1405 and become Pope in 1458 with the name of Pius II. Great humanist, Pius II wanted to transform Pienza from small medieval village to a papal residence in Renaissance style. The works last little more than three years and in 1462 Pius II consecrated the Cathedral and inaugurated the new town of Pienza. Most of the important historical-artistic patrimony of Pienza is concentrated in the evocative square dedicated to Pope Pius II, a personality that has given a lot to the town: isolated and very visible, the Cathedral, in front of it the Communal Palace and next Borgia Palace and Piccolomini Palace. The Cathedral di Santa Maria Assunta was realized for will of Pope Pius II between 1459 and 1462. On the facade in fact there is the Piccolomini crest. The interior, still structurally linked to gothic style, is divided in three naves. The apse is divided into three chapels, in the biggest one there is the choir. The church is enriched by paintings, made on a commission of Pius II by the most famous artists of that time.
