Monteverdi Marittimo

Monteverdi Marittimo is situated in a territory marked by an extremely hard nature, mountains that offer an evocative and fascinating panorama. The village was described by Cicero and Pliny, and was famous as harbour of Volterra, but also for its natural creek that was a shelter for pirates. The historical vicissitudes of Monteverdi are closely linked to those of the monastery of San Pietro in Palazzuolo, whose monks bulit walls and fortified towers in 1308. The Benedictine monastery of San Pietro in Palazzuolo was in the locality of Poggio a Badia; its foundation dates to 754 and is connected to the figure of San Walfredo, thought the founder of the noble family Della Gherardesca. In the 11th century the monastery acquired remarkable importance but at the end of the 12th it was moved. Because of the assault of the Pisa and Florence troops, the monastery was abandoned in 1561. The current Monteverdi, as the other towns of the valley, is a rich village, fascinating, that conserves in the historical center its long history.
