The legend tells that in 1573 a shepherd girl, Jacopa, lost her flock, but when she invoke the Virgin Mary she found it; after that event, there were others, and the foundation of Monsummano is connected to the name of the Granduca Ferdinando of Tuscany, who, after these miraculous events, wanted to built a big Church for the Madonna della Fontenuova. Near the church then the houses started to rise and thus the current town was created.
The center is picturesque and you can visit the Church of San Nicolao, the Church of San Michele and Lorenzo, the Villa Medicea of Montevettolini and the museums, among which the Museum of the City and the Territory.
Monsummano due its success to the discovery of the Thermal Caves: they are natural warm caves, with thermal waters used for therapeutic purposes, and are situated in a park; the cave, full of stalactites and stalagmites, is a natural sauna.
