Massarosa

In a pleasant landscape, the town of Massarosa lies, between the Alps Apuane and the Versilia. Here the nature rules, on hills the work of the man and the nature finds a solid harmony, and in the campaigns you can met ancient churches, villages, villas, humble or splendid houses, that give to the landscape the taste of history. Massarosa, as many other towns of the area, is divided into different hamlets. In the hamlet of Pieve a Elici, there is the Church of San Pantaleone; it is a prestigious architectonic complex of the 13th century, even if the former early-Christian church would go back to the 4th - 5th century (it is remembered in the year 892). The church is lacking in elements of decoration. The bell tower has been obtained from one pre-existing defensive structure. It is the most important among the churches of the Versilia and is considered an authentic jewel of Romanesque art. Massaciuccoli is famous for its lake that is part of a natural park. In the protected area various exemplary of birds and various types of plants can be admired... Massaciuccoli is famous also for the ancient walls that emerge between its secular olive trees. Today, you can see the ruins of the Roman Baths and the mosaic. In Bargecchia, the church of San Martino is noteworthy; it keeps important paintings, like the fragmentary triptyc of the 14th century, with San Sisto Pope between San Lorenzo and a Martyr Saint, with the Redeemer and Prophets. According to tradition, the composer Giacomo Puccini was usual to come often to Bargecchia in order to listen the sound of the bells of the Church of San Martino. Such sound was inserted by the composer at the end of the first act of its work "Tosca".
