Follonica

The name does not have a clear origin; as a town, Follonica is sure young, because its date of birth coincides with the construction of the Reali e Imperiali Fonderie intentional by Leopoldo II of Tuscany in 1834. But as a locality and harbour, Fullona is mentioned for the first time in 1038. The use of iron and its derivatives (overall cast iron) is typical of the city; since the Etruscan age the nearby metalliferous hills have been a resource, for the development of the iron and steel industry. In fact in Follonica there is the only Italian church with the fronton made of cast iron, the church of San Leopoldo. The neoclassical church has been planned by the architects Alessandro Manetti and Carlo Reishammer and realized between 1836 and 1838. It was the first Italian church to comprise numerous elements in cast iron (the pronaos, the rose window, the apse); in cast iron are also the inner tip of the Bell tower and some furnishings, all produced in the Regie Fonderie Follonichesi, in front of the Church. Follonica has also a big touristic tradition. The position, in the center of a gulf and in front of the Elba island, guarantees a sure sea and with a slow declivity. Since the year 2000 until 2007 Follonica has conquered the blue flag of Europe that certifies the high quality of the water, the environment and the coast, of the services and of the emergency measures.
