Colle Val d'Elsa

Colle di Val d' Elsa is situated in the heart of the Tuscany, in a strategically favorable position, near the cities of Siena, Florence and Volterra, on the Via Francigena. Its ancient part is clinging to a high hill. Anciently the city was divided in three parts. In the town, worthy a visit is the Cathedral of Santi Alberto and Marziale, built from 1603 on the place of the former Pieve of San Salvatore. Inside the cathedral, in a tabernacle, there is one of the nail that was used to crucify Christ. And then, as in many other towns of Tuscany, we find the Pretorio Palace, whose construction dates back to the 14th century, and that has on the facade several crests. In the course of the centuries the Palace has been used after several uses: currently it accommodates an Archaeological Museum. Who wants to enjoy the magnificent view on the Piano di Colle Val d' Elsa and of the entire Valley does not have to lose the walk until the Baluardo, a defensive bastion re-built probably after the siege of 1479. The city is moreover famous because it is the birthplace of Arnolfo di Cambio, sculptor and architect of medieval age (1240 - 1302), to who the main square is dedicated. Today Colle is considered the "Cittą del Cristallo" (city of crystal) it holds 15% of all the world-wide production of crystal glass and beyond 95% of the Italian one.
