Church of San Domenico

The Church of San Domenico is one of the most famous sacred buildings of Arezzo for the presence, in its inside, of the wooden Crucifix painted by Cimabue, considered one of the masterpiece of the painting of the 1200's, datable to the end of the Sixties of that century. The church was begun in 1275 and ended in the Fourteenth century. The painting decoration is well documented. It is a mature work of Spinello Aretino(1395-1400) the fresco with “Santi Filippo and Giacomo Minore and history of their life and Santa Caterina”. The Dragondelli chapel has a gothic structure with an altar carved by Giovanni di Francesco from Florence (1368) and frescoes with “Jesus between the doctors” of Gregorio and Donato of Arezzo. A “Madonna with the Child” in stone, was one of the series of sculptures that from 1339 decorated the ten doors of the city.
