Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina
Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, encircled by thick chestnut tree woods, is a medieval village situated in panoramic position on a hill. Castelnuovo is very pleasant; it has a typical medieval appearance, in fact it conserves the ancient lay-out of the streets, dominated by the church of the Santissimo Salvatore, that rises where once stood the ancient castle. The church as we see it today is fruit of restorations of the 18th century; inside, there is a precious wooden Crocifisso dated to the early 14th century. From Castelnuovo, it is possible to visit the area by walking, thanks to beautiful paths dipped in the nature of the Val di Cecina: leaving from the cemetary, as an example, a path leads to the panoramic point of Castelnuovo, from where it can be enjoyed a wonderful landscape, that goes from the valley and the hills to the coast, the sea, the Island Elba and, when the sky is clear, until Corsica.
