Castelnuovo di Garfagnana

Castelnuovo developed under the dominion of Estensi family, who asserted their power in the first half of the 15th century, and it became the most important political and administrative city of Garfagnana. Today it is a wide city, subdivided in different "rioni" (quarters): the ancient ones are near the walls of the castle, while the modern ones have maintained the archaic name of the zone where they are. In the fortified village there are some of the main monuments of the city, as the Rocca Ariostesca, the Communal Palace and the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul. The Rocca Ariostesca, symbol of the city, dues its name to the fact that the poet Ludovico Ariosto lived here from 1522 to 1525, because he was governor of the province of Garfagnana. The original structure of the Rocca as we see it today dates to the 12th century and today it is seat of exhibitions, cultural events and of the Archaeological Museum. The Cathedral is worthy a visit, too: it was erected in the 16th century on the ruins of previous church. Inside, many works of art among which we remember the so-called " Black Christ " , a sculpture of the 15th century, miraculously saved from a fire in 1977.
