Botanical garden

The Botanical Garden, risen in 1820 thanks to Maria Luisa di Borbone, was considered among the collateral structures of the Regia Universitą di Lucca, and realized together to a Laboratory of Physics and an Astronomical Observatory. Today the collection has approximately 200 species and comprises camelias, rhododendrons and azaleas. In 1920 the botanical Garden passed to the Townhall of Lucca, becoming a public garden. Among the furnishing elements that embellish the garden, the big medallions that describe important events about the Botanical Garden. Other elements are: the gate with pillars, decorated with leaves of bay in relief and with two lions, a sphinx and a pumpkin made of clay, that adorn the octagonal bathtub used for the cultivation of aquatic plants. As a background of the central avenue, close to the small lake, there is a beautiful group of cypresses of Virginia.
