Barberino di Mugello
Barberino was founded in the Middle Ages, in a period of fights for economical power and has been a vital town in the valley. As memories of the times in which its territory had seen those wars, today Barberino is rich in historical castles, churches and buildings, that it is possible to visit. We remember, as an example: the Villa of Cafaggiolo, that belonged to the Medici family since the 14th century and was restructured after 1428. Currently inside of the villa there are the copies, by the painter Carmine Fontanarosa, of a series of portraits of famous people of the time. Between the numerous and beautiful churches, the Abbey of Santa Maria in Vigesimo, founded in the 11th century and restored many times, and then the Church of San Lorenzo alle Croci, the Church of Sant'Andrea in Camoggiano and many other religious buildings, scattered between the hamlets of the town. The artistic patrimony is not the only wealth of Barberino, that, as all the towns in Mugello, has great natural beauties: from 1999, moreover, in the zone an artificial lake has been created, the Lake of Bilancino, where it is possible to refresh swimming or to fish.
